"At Grandmother's House" (Edge)

Uh, yeah, this is really more silly than edgy, but since it has issues of consent and sanity and possible mockery of the elderly...I'm gonna go with Edge for the category.

Mattie Cohen was staying with her grandmother for three weeks while her apartment building was being renovated.

Mattie adored her grandmother. She was a dear old woman, creeping up on 85, and she had raised six children, including Mattie's mother. She welcomed Mattie into her home with wide-open arms, served her cookies, and chatted about old times.

Of course, there were a few hitches. Granny's memory wasn't what it used to be, and she was easily confused. She understood that Mattie was her granddaughter, but she had a rather loose grasp on Time. At the beginning it was clear to the old woman that Mattie was 24, had a job and paid her rent--but as the days wore on, things got a bit stranger. One day Granny asked her if she had a date yet for the tenth- grade dance, or if she'd studied for the biology test. The next day she wanted to hear stories about Girl Scout Camp. Once, she threatened Mattie with "a good spanking" if she didn't pick up her "toys."

At first Mattie was patient with her, putting a smile on her face and sympathizing with gran's aging process. But her patience wore thin. After a week and a half, she became snippy with her grandmother, barking at her whenever she made mistakes.

"My, aren't we cranky today!" Grandma said somewhat indulgently. "I think someone needs a diaper change."

Mattie didn't disguise her irritation. "I'm not in diapers anymore, Gran," she snapped, rolling her eyes.

"Don't you take that tone with me, young lady, or I'll give you a spanking," Granny warned.

"Whatever." Mattie rolled her eyes again, annoyed and pissed, and turned away. Immediately a sharp set of nails dug into her upper arm and spun her back around. Granny's face was livid.

"How dare you be so disrespectful!" Before Mattie could squeak out a single protest, Granny yanked her by the ear and dragged her toward a chair against the wall. Without a word, she sat down, ramrod straight, and in the no-nonsense manner of a mother of six, bent Mattie over her knee. Shock paralyzed the young woman as her grandmother removed her jeans, and then slipped her underpants down below her thighs.

Granny then proceeded to spank Mattie soundly, her weathered hand crashing down on the girl's bare backside. It would have been easy enough for Mattie to overpower her frail grandmother, but the force of the hand delivering the spanking reduced her to a frightened little girl. She didn't dare move. Granny spanked firmly, and it wasn't long before Mattie began to squirm, whimper and sob.

Granny felt rather bad at having to be so severe with her granddaughter. After all, she was only visiting for a short while. But she reminded herself that sometimes, a long hard spanking is exactly what a child needs. She knew Mattie would appreciate the discipline one day--when she was a little older.

skull reviews

The issues of age and sanity do bring edge to this story. If I put myself in Mattie's position, I see how patience would wear thin in a hurry. It is also easy to understand the protagonist's refusal to physically overpower such a frail woman. At the same time though, I could not suspend disbelief at the force of the blows, given the age and condition of the Top in this story. It all makes for a unique and interesting saga with an unusual edge.

This was a decent basic spanking story, but I didn't think it was edgy at all, even for the vague reasons in the comments included with it. The spanking seemed completely justified. What I didn't understand was the ending. It was very abrupt and felt like something was missing.

This is not what I would call an edge story, but I think it would have been difficult to categorize elsewhere as well. After all, she was an adult but the grandmother thought she was a child so it could be argued that either of those categories would fit. Either way, it certainly got a laugh out of me. I especially love the ending. For her crankyness, with a woman who was kindly letting her stay there for three weeks, she did deserve a spanking. Possibly it was a case of 'you're never too old!'

Maybe I liked it so much because I used to work with the elderly, and have actually been in similar situations, I'm not sure, but I did enjoy reading it and it put a smile on my face. It should also receive points for being the first spanking I've ever read that was caused by senility.

At first this story didn't seem like it belonged in the edge category. But by the time I finished reading it, I did find it hit some edge notes for me. Because having dealt with senility in my own family as my grandfather's memory slipped in and out of present and past, I recognized my own discomfort in how to behave when he seemed, like that between the grandmother in this story, was lost between past and present. Part of me too identified with the shame I would suspect the granddaughter felt for her own impatience. Perhaps this too explains why she allows the spanking to continue rather than resisting?

This story was a bit sad while also being funny and kind. Bittersweet perhaps?

Oh, I really liked this story! It was not edgy to me, but very clever and funny. I liked how the grandmother still thought of her granddaughter as being a young child at the end; I somehow thought maybe she would realize her mistake. Very cute!
